Iron Man sat here....

I am pretty sure this is the stuff that reality tv car shows for cable are made of.

It starts with a Craigslist post, and a big dose 'unobtainium'. Yeah, I know, huh? Craigslist! The dosage is a one of a kind aluminum Cobra Roadster that had a starring role in Tony Stark's garage for the first Iron Man feature film. Right next to the 32 Ford and the Saleen, the 1965 427 roadster sat quietly until Tony tried to fly his new suit.

This beautiful Blue car was one of two made for this production, and this is the one that Iron Man squashed on the first take. Last week, the car was resting quietly in a west valley garage,  the chassis hammered up, pieces and parts removed, and the last auction winner in over his head. Today its new temporary home is at Superstition Specialty Cars and Dave's to do list is lengthy.

I asked my dad if he had any experience with aluminum bodies and he giggled, and started rambling off a list which included an AC Bristol. I figure with Dave's lengthy Cobra replica experience which included a ground up build from a buck template, and dad's gazillion years in collision and restoration, these two have this one down. I am looking forward to seeing Brent's Iron Man 427 roadster project come roaring to life.

Update December 2014: It looks like Brent decided to sell it as the crushed Iron Man car at Barrett Jackson this winter! We are looking forward to seeing some great auction action with this car! Stay tuned in January!

Franken-Hemi!

It all started innocently enough. It was a warm sunny day in Gilbert. At hand a nicely rodded Plymouth, an old blue hemi truck, and a diabolical plan to create a monster...

Lightening strikes! A dense fog pools through the shop... Thunder roars from above! Tools flying all over! The Mad Mechanic lifts his head back and belts out "mwa·ha·ha·ha!!! It is alive!!!!"

Well, we all wish it happened like that, right? The story goes more like re-building the hemi, yada, yada, yada, then we finally get to go Mwa-ha-ha-ha!!!! At the end of our story, Danny's Plymouth is a gorgeous car with a rip-roaring motor that we hope gives him miles of smiles!

The End Resuts...

John's 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, Completed Resto-Mod
This was a long time coming, but seeing the finished product under the studio lights of the Epiphany Photography Studio it sure makes for a pretty photo. Our friend Tim Williams (Timmy Chu Studios) took this beauty at a recent photo shoot event for the Photographers Adventure Club (more of Tim's photos here: http://www.timmychu.com/57_models). There a bunch on facebook too from other local awesome photographers.

I am very proud of Dave using his eye for simplistic beauty on this. His art is a long frustrating process, but after many years, Superstition Specialty Cars hit it out of the park. A reliable, drivable, piece of art (with working A/C!!!) is the result.

The Best Day Ever...

It was years in the making. Lots of work, sweat, tears, cursing, you name it. What started as some minor body work turned into a complete resto-mod project; a piece of art. He was finally able to showcase the car.

At the finish line, Dave wanted a nice photo shoot of the car, and in doing so, he ended up having the best day ever! He was floating for days after the photo shoot. Not only was he able to get John's finished 1957 Chevy BelAir, Timmy Chu studios photographer Tim Williams, a pretty pin-up girl Shea, and an old plane down at Stellar Airpark, he got a private tour of the elusive Pratt Collection.

Dave spent days telling anyone within earshot about all of the vehicles that he saw in the Pratt Collection that he had been obsessing about for years as they were bought up over at Barret Jackson. I mean, how many folks record the auto auction shows?
